About the Prize


Man Asian Literary Prize is an annual award for an "Asian novel unpublished in English". The first Prize was awarded to the Chinese writer Jiang Rong for his novel Wolf Totem on 10 November 2007.

The objectives of the Asian Literary Prize are:
To bring exciting new Asian authors to the attention of the world literary community;
To facilitate publishing and translation of Asian literature in and into English; and
To highlight Asia's developing role in world literature.

The Prize was initiated by the Hong Kong International Literary Festival Limited with financial support from Man Group plc. It is administered by representatives from the Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival, the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.


Key dates for the 2008 Prize
Submissions in English will be accepted electronically online from 5 December 2007 until 31 March 2008.
A long list will be announced in approximately mid-July 2008.
A short list of five candidates will be announced approximately 1 November 2008.
The winner will be announced in approximately the last week of November 2008.


Award amounts
US$10,000 to the winning author;
US$3,000 to translator (if any and if eligible) of the winning work.


The Administrative Committee of the Prize consists of Mr Peter Gordon (Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival), Prof. Christopher Hutton (Head of School of English, University of Hong Kong), Prof. David Parker (Head of English Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Ms Sue Gourlay (Man Investments).

The Prize is supported financially by Man Group plc.
