Like the protagonists of her novel Residue, Nitasha Kaul is from Kashmir but grew up in Delhi. She studied in England and Indian and earned a doctorate in Economics after which she gave up her academic post to travel, write and collect pictures of streets. In addition to fiction and poetry, she has published a book on economics and philosophy. In 2010, she has been Associate Professor of Creative Writing in Bhutan. Residue is a story about the longings of exiles. Leon Ali grows up in Delhi with a missing communist father who named him for Trotsky. When Leon meets fellow Kashmiri, Keya Raina, they realise their pasts are intertwined and they ultimately discover the story of Shula Farid, the beautiful bohemian half-Jewish wife of a staid Bengali diplomat, and her ill-fated affair a generation ago.
