Judges for the 2008 Prize


Three outstanding international judges have agreed to contribute their time and expertise to selecting the shortlisted works and the winner from among the longlist. The judges are:

The Rt Hon Adrienne Clarkson (Chair) was Governor-General of Canada from 1999 to 2005 and a judge of the 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize. A leading figure in Canada's cultural life, Madame Clarkson has had a rich and distinguished career in broadcasting journalism, the arts and public service. Her memoirs have been published under the title Heart Matters.
The acclaimed Indian writer and thinker Pankaj Mishra is the author of the New York Time's Notable books Temptations of the West: How to be Modern in India, Pakistan and Beyond and An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World, and a novel, The Romantics. Mishra's writing has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Review of Books, the Guardian, Granta and the New Statesman, among other American, British, and Indian publications.

Nicholas Jose is the author of several acclaimed novels, including Paper Nautilus, The Rose Crossing, The Custodians, The Red Thread, and Original Face, as well as a memoir, Black Sheep: Journey to Borroloola. He was Cultural Counsellor at the Australian Embassy, Beijing, from 1987 to 1990. He currently holds the Chair of Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide and was a judge of Kiriyama Prize in 2004.
